Sinbad

words Keith Barbee

Comedian Sinbad

A diverse crowd showed up at the Warner Theatre recently to laugh out loud at the sheer comedic genius of Sinbad.

Casually entering the room from stage right wearing a t-shirt and track pants, the seasoned comedian opened the show with jabs at Homeland Security and Terrorism in which he explained his missing suit, “It never made it through security.”

He also joked about the Presidential race and Senator Kerry being unspecific in his goals and objectives to lead the country. On Healthcare, which is always a hot issue, he said that most Americans can’t even get flu vaccinations this year.

Sinbad repeatedly clowned latecomers. Asking a couple why they were late, the wife responded, “we were moving” to which the comedian remarked, “What, you don’t know where you live?”

He also commented on hip hop and the effects that it is having on society and white America as a whole with white boys wearing sagging jeans and addressing him as “my nigga” on the street.

Talking about the effects of plastic surgery, the comedian remarked, “Taking fat from your butt and putting it in your lips. Now your body is confused and your face wants to sit down.”

The show took an Iyanla Vanzant turn at the end where the comedian prompted women in the audience to ask any pressing questions that they had about men. Questions ranged from, “Why don’t men cry,” to “Why doesn’t my husband appreciate my cooking,” to “Why does my husband spend so much time on the internet?”

“Is he an online trader? Is his job online?” was his response to the latter question when she also interjected that he spends nearly seven hours online at a time. He advised the husband to stay out of the chat rooms when it was later revealed that he was online playing golf.

Sinbad was in rare form as he “freestyled” comedy. His quick wit was surefire as he kept the audience bent over with laughter and crying tears from his hilarious take on all things domestic in this last segment.

One lady asked where she could find a good man. Sinbad then asked where she was from and she responded that she had moved from Detroit to DC in search of one. The comedian chuckled and responded, “You moved from inner city to inner city looking for a sensitive thug? They don’t exist! You should have moved to Iowa.”

Although not touted as a King of Comedy, Sinbad was and is the Bill Cosby of his generation. Laughter is guaranteed without the use of expletives and black humor which prevails in recent stand-up routines.

And in times like these (Botox, The Hip Hop Takeover, Weapons of Mass Destruction), we could all use a good wholesome laugh.
